i don't like the way that
these tragedies have a habit of falling on the cusp of presidential elections.

the first time this happened, bush, wide-eyed, sat reading to schoolchildren. he went into hiding.
where is he now?
his response to huricaine katrina was telling,
kanye was right. he doesn't care about black people.
or poor people. or us.

we didn't blame him. fresh from the clinton bloom. who could have known?
it wasn't his fault. we didn't know how to react.
it was a clear declaration of war
but against who should we declare?

Iran
because they have nuclear weapons

iran
because of anthrax

abu ghraib

have the terrorists won?

they bombed the twin towers as an anti-capitalist statement.
they destroyed a symbol of world trade.
now wall street has come crashing down.
the bull was gored lying on it's side.

now we stand to elect a new president
a financial crisis has rocked wall street like an earthquake
and where is bush?

we haven't had a chance to enjoy the presidency
taken the bloom off the rose

bush wuz robbed of enjoying even his first few moments in office
and was a particularly vulnerable candidate
being a figurehead and all.

Comment from "Does Class Trump Race?"
Posted 13 Feb 2008 at 1:50 pm

One important difference between class and race is that in the U.S, people change their class as they acquire (or lose) economic, intellectual, and social privilege. However, race is immutable.
When racial minorities change classes, they do so despite (and sometimes because of) the lingering effects of institutionalized racism.
Race doesn’t exactly trump class, but it is a factor that can impact your class privilege.
For example: Look at discriminatory admissions practices at colleges and universities that limited the ability of minorities of our grandparent’s generation to choose college. How many of us are first or second generation college graduates as a result? How did segregation in public schools affect the readiness of our parent’s generation to enter elite colleges and universities?
Economic and educational policies that disproportionally impacted minorities in the past have created class differences that can still be drawn along racial lines today.
The privilege meme could have included a question about race to show that the two don’t necessarily operate independently.

i read an op-ed letter claiming that obama's election had "finally leveled the playing field," but i believe he's using that metaphor too literally.

i think it actually means, leveling racial disparities in education, wealth, incarceration rates, healthcare, and political involvement in the united states.

the sharp spikes and peaks along these graphs indicate our history's disparate treatment of minority populations. and as long as they persist, we cannot be said to offer equal opportunity.
